Madison started back to school today...August 1st! I'm not happy how early the schools here in Phoenix start back to school but there is nothing to do about it but try to show some enthusiasm! Last year, I had a back to school party (HERE). This year with everything (moving, surgery, and recovery) wasn't able to plan one. However, I really wanted to make this day special. I got this back to school breakfast idea from my friend Mariah of Giggles Galore. She had such a cute back to school breakfast for her kiddos last year! I didn't go out and buy a single thing....I used stuff from Madison's bathroom actually. Here is the setup before the food was put on the table. Madison LOVES to eat outside. It can be 120 degrees (for real) outside and she wants to eat outside. So I set up her breakfast table on our back patio.
I bought this picture of two owls from Target and it hangs in Madison's bathroom. Madison says that the bigger owl is me and the smaller owl is her. One day while giving her a bath she asked me was I going to die and leave her like my mommy died and left me. I explained to her that everyone dies and no one knows when it's going to happen. We had a long discussion of death and spirituality. At the end of the conversation I told her that OWL never leave her ... maybe my body will but my love for her and all of the memories of our time together will live on in her heart. She got a kick out of me say OWL (cause I was pointing to the "mommy" owl) never leave her. I know her young mind can't quite comprehend something so difficult but I think she got a little bit of what I was saying to her. Now every time she sees an owl...she looks at me and says you'll never leave me mommy because you are in my heart. It makes me almost want to cry each time! I pray that I will leave her with the fondest of memories and I do my best every day to let her know how much I cherish her.
The only thing that I actually crafted (the night before) was this owl pillow. I can't sew so just took some on hand fabric and cut out my shapes and used fabric glue and batting. Madison is super shy and is always carrying a toy for security. She is not aloud to have a toy in first grade so I made this small owl pillow so she could put in her backpack and know that mommy is with her. She loved the idea that if she got scared or nervous she could look in her backpack and know that her owl would be there.
I love how sweet and loving my daughter is.
This is actually a tea candle holder but put a dixie cup of water in and stuck some flowers in.
I used her tooth brush holder for her cutlery and napkin.
I used her bathroom dixie cup holder to hold her yogurt. I printed off the owl saying and put in an IKEA frame embellished with an wood owl that I had left over from a woodland party. I love my plastic mason mug with green lid and straw.....Walmart special!
I tried to make the pancake resemble an owl. This was really her first day of school not a "staged" party....so I really had to hurry or be late! She loved it so that's all that matters!
I used my Bake It Pretty owl candy mold that I had from Madison's Owl-O-Ween party. (You know....the party that was featured in Mingle magazine....oh am I bragging....just a little) I think it was a cute way to display some grapes....even though she only ate one! UGH!
My 1st grader's breakfast view. Ugh ..... seriously can time just slow down....just a little. What are your plans for back to school??
